The challenge:

Which of the four 3D objects below would could be made by this flattened shape?

 

This puzzle is an exercise in picturing a flattened, opened up cube as the 3D object it would create.

 

 

What approach did you take? Did you start with "constructing" the shape in your head and then looking at the possible answers to determine the right one?

 

 

Or, did you look at each solution and then see whether it was possible? eg Solution 1 requires two white sides to be adjacent and this isn't possible.

 

 

Or did you do something else altogether?

 

 

The answer is 3.

 

Options 1 and 4 aren't possible because the white sides are always separated by a black sides.

 

Option 2 isn't possible because three black sides will never meet.
